    You seem like you know alot about hamsters. I have a female dwarf hamster who just had baby hamsters about 2 hours ago. It looked like she had about 8-10. She had them in the wheel. When I realized she had them, I was excited and happy. I rushed and got my mini flash light to see them better. Now, I wish I hadn't. She started to rip their little heads off right in front of my eyes. I saw alot of blood and guts. I am mortified, freaked out and in extreme shock!!! Why would she do such a thing? I just glanced at her again and it looks like she is still eating them. What will happen to her if she eats them all? Will she die and what should I do?

      Hi there,

      What you are seeing is completely normal. It is OK to be a little freaked out, but believe it or not, it's actually natural for a mother hamster to do this. See, once a female hamster gives birth, she immediately separates the weak babies from the strong ones. Her motherly instincts kick in and she actually EATS the weak ones, knowing that they would not have survived. Of course the mom feels bad, but this is more of a ritual for hamsters, and it's sad but painless for the babies. The mother does this to eliminate the weaklings to put them out of their misery, AND it also is good for the mom to eat this because it provides extra needed nutrition to get her back to average health after giving birth. Although this may not be the tastiest treat, the mother does this out of love.

      I have two hamsters myself and after I got the male, I noticed that the female started eating the male! I was so scared that she was going to kill him. It's been 3 months that my hamsters have been living together in the same cage and surprisingly...no babies!!! I decided to seperate them cause I didn't want the male hamster to die. He was missing a lot of fur and bleeded a lot after I seperated him from the female hamster. Gosh I hate the female hamsters! They are so dangerous!!!

      sometimes when a female hamster has babies she... eats them because she doesn't have enough nutrition in her body or she stressed out. It's normal though. and sometimes it IS out of love. hope this helped.

      I have a hamster that died 2 days ago. I loved her so much. her name was Oreo. She was black and white. My BFF had her sister and she named her cookie. I have some names for you guys:

    Hi Steph,

    My sincere apologies for the very late reply, as i have not been checking my mails.

    Okay. First things first. Your Hamster mother has babies for the first time.

    There could be 2 possiblities.

    First :
    The babies are not healthy, so the mum ate them up to prevent them from suffering in the future

    Second:
    The mother could very very anxious, just like you, and she could have been so protective of her children that a little light can affect it.

    In the future, if you have hamster babies again, i would advice you to cover half of the cage; the darker side where the mother has given birth, then it wil be easier for you to peek, while giving the mother plenty of privacy.

    they are chinese hamsters and they are my first pets
    i think they r feeling cold dese days and i put some cotton to keep it warm
    is that okay?
    and i named the white hamster "Foo" and the brown one "Dogg" , heheh
    they are adorably little creatures with pink eyes :)
    ps: do u give a bath to hamsters?
    they dont smell very nice these days.
    how can i keep them warm..and how long will it take dem to respond to their names?

    I have a two year old male Syrian hamster named Trigger. He is very tamed...yesterday I got a 5 week old female Syrian hamster and I don't know what to name it....any suggestions? She is black on both ends with a white band going around her. Any names would be appreciated...I didn't like any of the names on here by the way.

    about the winter white dwarf... i had a hamster named Dumpling (RIP Dumpling- best hammy ever!) and i think that it would fit your hamster! so ya. consider naming him dumpling!

    and oh yes.
    this sunday (may 9th) i am getting a male syrian -black eyed cream, so cute!- and i dunno wat to name him! i was thinking maybe peaches or gus..... possible sherbet. oh or Tigger! plz tell me some names you think that would be good or if you like any of the ones that i suggested thx!

    I've called my Hamster "Banoffee" after the banoffee pie.

    She is a Syrian Cream banded hamster, cream and light-golden with a pink nose and a white belly :]

    You can avoid a mother hamster eating her babies by covering the side of the cage that she had the babies on with a towel and by not bothering her or her babies at all for the first 3 weeks except to change food and water. Keep the cage in quiet place too, so the mother hamster doesn't get stressed. You can seperate the babies from their mother when they are four weeks old. Also, don't ever introduce the babies to their father.

    When the female hamster is pregnant, they shouldn't be disturb and should be placed in quiet place and need to very very careful while feeding them...I had my hamster pregnant twice and she gave birth to 7 hamsters each time and didn't kill none of them. When she gives birth, don't go near it or touch any babies coz they can smell and they will eat their own babies don't put any hamster in same cage except for mom and the babies, even when she is pregnant it's better to keep her in separate cage two weeks before she gives birth and in quiet environment to prevent her from killing her own babies..

    Yesterday I got a Petco gift card (for my b day) And i was walking around the store, until out of the corner of my eye, I see this little creature standing on its hind legs, just staring at me. I just sat down next to the cage, and just stared back at it. For like, 20 min!! Mom: "Not a chance!"... that night I walked out of petco with a little box. And inside, was a fancy dwarf hamster :) I think i'll name it either: Toby, Todo or Bear ( its a male, but they cut off his nuggets) LOL ♥

    I got my first hamster 21/oct/2010, he was a black syrian and sooooo cute. his mum and dad were brother and sister so he ended up with just 3 legs and a stump so i had the perfect name! Stumpy! he never bit, perfect temperment and lived a good happy life, at 1 year and 8 months he sadly had to be put to sleep because of a huge lump on the back of his neck. My first hamster and the best :) Rest in Peace my sweet Stumpy :'( love you boy.
